The year was 2003.
The place was Etegwe, Yenagoa, Bayelsa state of Nigeria. The event
was the famous Etegwe oil spill which polluted large part of the
wetland and flowed directly into the spiralling Epie Creek -
contributary of the River Nun. The destruction of vegetation and
animal life was wanton and quite unprecedented. Three days after,
massive fish kill was recorded.
As usual individuals,
communities, groups and even governments claimed damages and some
were compensated in cash or kind. However, the land and water which
were worst affected lost their biodiversity and had no

DID YOU KNOW THAT CONSUMING FISHES CAUGHT FROM RIVERS
POLLUTED BY CRUDE OIL CAN POISON YOU?
You run the spongebob atlantis game weblog
risk of contacting dangerous
sicknesses such as cancer if you consume fishes caught from rivers
and wetlands polluted by crude oil. Many fishes exposed to crude oil
and allied pollutants soon become saturated by PAHs a potent
cancer causing agent. Some common and highly tasty species of fishes
in the Niger delta region of Nigeria are now affected by PAHs. A
test carried out by Scientists on some fish specimens caught from
Bayelsa State of Nigeria revealed a heavy presence of PAHs on their
consumable flesh. Species analysed include: Parachanna
obscura(snake head); Clarias gariepinus (mud catfish) ,
pseudotolithus elongatus(croaker), etc. These three
constitute some of the very popular table fishes among the locals.
This therefore explains the high rate of cancer now plaguing people
at the low income level in the Niger Delta region
